IMO, there was so many extremely blatant clues pointing to Lan's death in this book that I would be surprised if he DID die. Just seems uncharacteristic of WoT to drop that many clues that blatantly.
I thought the black knife might reference the dull one that hides you from the shadow from KoD. Could have sworn it has/had a black blade. I'd have to go check to be sure though.
