I'll never completely understand why he thought it would be necessary to have this "Gandalf Returns" moment to help Rand. This is one of the reasons I have a hard time rating KoD above the bottom of the list when comparing books. The scene where Mat finds out about the need to rescue her seemed to be nearly fan fiction in its execution.
