I don't think that the blind begger viewing was to mean that Rand actually lost his sight. Its was more that he did not see how the way he was behaving was counter productive. He has spiritually been blind now for the last book, perhaps the last few books with his "I must be harder" line.
It was only at the end of TGS that he realised he was on the wrong path and his "eyes" opened, ending his blindness.
