The big difference in Video Game violence and real violence, is that you do get hurt personally in a real war, no matter what your skill levels are.
Each generation that has not personally experienced war tend to boast the hurt they can inflict on others, and ignore the possibility of getting hurt. A "Hard Rand" only thought he can not be hurt.
