You can open a gateway from where you stand, point A, to point B elsewhere. You can NOT open a gateway from arbitrary point B to arbitrary point C, while you are staying at point A.
So flooding trollocs would require the channelers to be standing very close to a large body of water. It may even require the channeler to "know" the watery environment very well first, but I am not sure what does it mean to "know" water very well.
The fire bombing idea is not bad. But is it similar to inverted lighting bolt? Both comes from above, and both can be stealthy.
