When I see Brandon needing clarification or not having a full understanding of things, I interpret it different. What that tells me is that whatever the issue is, it's not terribly important. BS understands things well but he has concentrated on what he needs to understand to complete the series in the best way possible. When we find something he doesn't have a good understanding of, it points to that not being important enough for him to have developed the understanding. He has Maria and Allen to take of these small details in the event that they became relevant at all.
I think that RJ had these kind of moments as well - it's just that we never saw them because he would just 'RAFO' the question. Brandon's willingness and I would go as far to say desire, to answer fan questions as fully as possible has the consequence of exposing himself more than RJ was ever willing to do.
And, as a fan, I think it's wonderful problem to have.
