In the very early pages of Mistborn (which is basically all I read), there is a character who is the Mistborn equivalent of a channeler, and he goes on a mission, the whole purpose of which, IMO, is to show the possibilities and potential of their magic system. Basically, there are only a dozen or so "weaves" that can be used in that system, but Sanderson did a remarkable job of showing off how versatile they could be in the hands of a creative user. Given his ingenuity with this sort of thing, I would not be surprised if he twigged onto this loophole in the Travelling rules and decided to make use of it.
