Rand is learning more and more from LTT in his head and has been for some time. The trick was probably a way to bypass the problem of having to learn. etc.
I took it as probably a trick that the Aes Sedai of old knew and used. That is just my interpretation though, it may not be what BS or RJ had in mind. But, I consider it just because no one else seems to know it or use it (none of the Ashaman or Aes Sedai who can travel).
