Mainly because a punch is generally not lethal and rarely is it a knock out blow, especially from across a table.

Plus it somewhat fails because of the whole "matador/bull" relationship...how does the less intelligent person know if they are being manipulated to do exactly what the more intelligent person wants them to do? The more intelligent person is a matador, controlling which way the red cape is being turned, while the dumber person is always thinking that they are doing the smart thing by attacking the red cape.

This actually made Rand seem somewhat slow-witted in my opinion, and is one of the reasons I don't believe he caught Graendal in his attack.

First, I think you're taking the metaphor too seriously. Second, I didn't think it was slow-witted. I thought it was a combo of: I know there is a red cape, but I'm not even entirely certain I'll see that the right way, so I'll just go knock down the matador's house while he's having dinner instead AND "Gawd I'm sick and tired of this, so I'm pulling an Indy and shooting the dude with the sword."

Knowing you're not as smart as someone else is probably the only way to beat that person. Playing the game won't work.
