I think having villains win on-screen keeps things interesting; they don't have to win all the time, but we as readers should be aware of their victories. It's not enough to have tea parties where every villain gloats but we as readers are in the dark, and have no idea what they're gloating about, only having access to Rand killing or balefiring the Forsaken one by one.

How awesome would it have been to see exactly what Semirhage did during her execution of the Seanchan royal family?
