I didn't mean why rename her at all ... I meant why specifically give her a name that is essentially "Suffer" if she wasn't going to be paying for bad behavior


Well, it could be a giant penance to put her in her place. I don't think the a'dam, sul'dam, and damane concept will survive the end of the series (though I think it's a good solution for criminals and BA, but doubt it will be used as such), so unless Suffa dies in the next two books, she'll be freed eventually. Perhaps she comes out of it a broken woman, perhaps just humbled.


I'm not so sure that we'll see the end of damane to be honest, RJ had planned outrigger novels based on the Seanchan civil war (Mat and Tuon rule the world) from what I understand ... which implies longer existence of the damane system.
