Hence his surprise that Rand knew about the ability to Travel short distances without knowing the ground.


Rand didn't know how to Travel, period. (So he wouldn't even know the rules AFAIK)

He knew how to Skim, and this was his first time to make a direct Travelling gateway. (The only other time was when he chased Ishy into TAR in the Stone, and he couldn't remember anything about how he did it later.)
