What's more interesting is how Ishy was quasi-trapped, and then the black cords which connect the male channelers to the Dark One. They protect against the Taint, but obviously that little feature was only evident post-Taint Placement. What else do the black cords do?

Firstly, they're not physical, or Sammael & Co could never have taken a nation without rousing suspicion by at least the elites. It's also interesting that they are never mentioned again after Rand's encounter with Asmo at Rhuidean IIRC. One more purpose may be the access to the TP, but in that case the female Chosen should have them, too.
