The pressure of the closing gateway would also simply press the stick away in your scenario, IMO.
I wonder how much force would be exerted here? Would the cuendillar object just drop to the ground near where the gateway was. Or does the gateway push it out with great strength. Could a closing gateway be used to launch a cuendillar projectile at incredible speeds.
That might make a potentially devastating weapon. Like a cannon except the energy came from the closing gateway rather than gunpowder or the like.
