not saying mail... Ashaman Narishma Send a noteboard - 14/01/2010 07:33:06 PM
They describe them pretty often in the books - they are a little larger than palm sized. And they actually seem to add weight to whatever is converted, regardless of the original material.

But, if memory serves, the discussion revolved around three main points:
1) Converting something to cuendillar melds it into a single item, so the harbor chain links became one massive construct rather than articulated links as it originally was. This would make it a problem to create cuendillar armor, since you'd need to convert the links before trying to create mail out of it.
2) The weight issue, which again, seems pretty legitimate in lieu of the fact that if a bunch of warriors are walking around with heavy masses of cuendillar as shields, they are no longer agile to keep up with changing battlefield conditions, and become actually more vulnerable to attack since their movement has been reduced
3) The necessary Talent to mass-produce them seems to depend on a combination of factors that were not easy for the Aes Sedai of the Tower to produce; only a couple of women in the rebel camp had any ability to convert an object to cuendillar without strain and of them, Egwene was by far the mightiest with an affinity for Earth and ability to use the weave in a large scale - thus only one women out of more than a thousand had an ability to produce it in enough amounts to come close to mass production, which seems overly limiting.

Basically, it seems like a great idea on paper, but the properties of cuendillar made it so that even during the Age of Legends, using it for this purpose was not an option, even while they used it for other, smaller things in common use.

I thought of mail and then remembered the fusing part, but I was thinking of plated that could then be fitted together with common bolts or the such for armor. as to the AOL it seems that I remember seeing somewhere that they did not make things out of cuendillar because not many knew how to make it and that since they had no way to destroy it they did not want masses of leftover cuendillar crap laying around. I would like to see some creative cuendillar uses in the next two books... I dont like the idea of the rediscovery of how to make it only to have it used the once to lock TV down...

As for how its made, I have only read about it being made from solid iron. If you can find something else it was made of let me know... I have seen enough descriptions to think that cuendillar would at sight seem to be a light porcelein seeming material and at sight you would expect it not to weigh much. I think it retains its original mass or something close to it... Now imagine the seals, they are like a big coaster, 5 or so inches across and probably a half inch thick. the original iron for that would have weighed a few pounds, I imagine that it would drag any belt down for being in the pouch...

it would not require much in the way of material to pound a tissue thin layer of iron, I wonder if an iron powder mixed into a paint would work as well. Either way you are looking at just a few pounds (less than 20 lbs) of material being used to make a fairly large shield. As far as shields go you would not find much of anything any lighter...
