Conceptually it's fine, but trying to make it work realistically seems impossible.

I agree completely if by making it work you mean fitting it into the story with what time is left.



fitting it into the story seems out of the question, but so does making the armor/shields etc from a practical standpoint... too many resources would need to be allocated for too little gain.
