One can't really compare a character saying something wrong in the series to the text of the author, which is obviously written as a bonus for interested fans (many casual readers of the WoT probably never read SoSG) outside the actual series to deliver more background informations on the Strike. It doesn't make much sense to me that this story would in essence be wrong, even if it is written in the form of an in world-story.
And as said, in the quote I profided RJ basically confirmed that the explanation can be found in SaSG:
"As I pointed out in something ... I wrote a piece called The Strike at Shayol Ghul ... there was a great division at the time – I don’t know if all of you have read i ... or have none of you read?"
RJ gives then the same explantion which can be found in SaSG.

Let's face it the man could spin truth on it's head when it suited him

I agree with Datakim on this one (well at least with the part regarding SaSG being as fallible as the rest of the text) ... like in many other circumstances RJ gave himself loopholes to work with in case he changed his mind later on. SaSG is the best known source of information, that is not author quote, so we have to trust the information within it, but it's also obvious to me that RJ could very easily change information under the guise of "the author of SaSG was wrong".
But I don't see why RJ suddenly would have changed his explanation for the fact that no strong enough women worked with LTT, just because it's claimed that this seems unrealistic. And as said, in his quote RJ confirmed that the political struggles led to this decision, similar to what is said in SaSG and in the Guide.
LTT and the bore.
