My little theory is that the last heir's or descendants of Hawkwing who were running away from the chaos after his death simply decided to do away with the sword. They tied it to a moderately big statue and dumped it when they were sailing away from the Stone (in Tear). And they ended up in Mayene!
It would make some sense in the context of the story.
