There's really nothing to indicate that Fain is that great at fighting or avoiding assassination. Fain's powers don't seem to give anything towards fighting, at least not directly, Rand almost kills him twice in direct combat. Maybe Slayer just isn't that great of an assassin.


I believe that Slayer will ultimately manage to kill Fain, since he might be - so to speak - the "pack leader" of the Super Darkhound Pack, who is hunting someone in the south of the Westlands. That Slayer didn't already achieve it, is simply for plot reasons.
