When I said it was the best history book I had read in ten years, I was thinking back to reading Wedgwood about ten years ago.

I certainly wasn't going to list Tolkien, even though I enjoyed The Lord of the Rings immensely. Frankly, Tolkien's work was a bit uneven - it dragged at times and at times was just stupid and silly (e.g., Tom Bombadil). All of the books on this list were fast, exciting reads (except Byzantium, which was exciting but not as fast).

Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
