The first book was, like you said, basically fan fiction. But the last was on par with Lions of Al-Rassan.


Isn't part of the problem with the first book that bringing contemporary characters (okay, to the extent that one can still consider the eighties contemporary... ) into a fantasy setting always looks somewhat silly until they've adjusted? And it might certainly contribute to the "fan fiction" impression as well.
