It was really the whole Jennifer/Guinevere storyline that got heavy handed

At a certain point, almost every scene containing Jennifer talked about how everyone looking at her was concerned that she no longer smiled or looked happy. It became worse when Arthur came out of nowhere, and everyone had to remark over and over again how terrible their high and lonely destiny would be, etc etc. I also didn't like Lancelot's fight against the monster.
I think I got annoyed with how operatic the story became.

Surely you realized it was going to pack a punch when the whole tree thing started.

The tree seemed a bit stilted to me. Kay was still struggling with his writing there, I think.
