If I were to advise you to check out one of the books on my list that you haven't (and assuming you're after more dystopian stuff) then I'd tell you to read Random Acts of Senseless Violence by Jack Womack. Mostly because it's not very well known so you're not likely to get too many people recommending it to you and because it really, really is messed up.

As for The Handmaid's Tale; I'm from the UK and found it disturbing because, I think, for someone on the outside looking at US society during the Bush era (which was when I read it) with the war on terror, the patriot act, the worrying right wing Christian influence on the president, etc. it was looking more prophetic than I think it has for a long time. Not actually something that was going to happen but, as I said before, the echoes were most definitely there. Can't say what it would be like reading it as someone from the US though, for obvious reasons .
Bitter, twisted and better than you.
