There is a Russian author who believes Margarita was Gorky's girlfriend.

Her name was Maria Andreeva. She got lots of money from Moscow millionaire Savva Morozov and handed most of that money over to the Bolsheviks. At the same time, however, she was a good person. She was oddly never even accused during the whole of the Great Terror and all the later Stalinist purges (probably because she kept quiet about what she thought). She was never married to Gorky but lived with him, and some (including a famous Russian author) believe that Gorky was the "master" and that his death was the tragedy that showed the complete death of literature in the Soviet Union.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.
