In GotM Erikson hadn't yet found himself and it includes some incredibly stupid things, notably the dialogue like you point out. Eventually though, and really only after you've read the following books, you begin to appreciate the detail, characters, storyline and world-building more.

This is what bothers me. I should be able to appreciate it while it's happening, as I did with every other book. I don't mind more detail cropping up, I just don't like outright retconning and summarising.

I wonder if he'll rewrite it eventually, removing or changing some of the more blatant GotM-isms to make it easier for newbies to get into. I kinda doubt it though, MBotF isn't for really for the casual, easy reader.


But if he did that, a lot of the fix-its he intro's in later books would become redundant.
