I think I was in 5th grade when my teacher gave me Flowers for Algernon to read. He often picked out books for us individually. I can also thank him for The Hobbit and A Spell for Chameleon.

Thompkins? Thompson? Maybe Thomas was his name. Isn't it funny that I remember what happened to Charlie and the mouse but not the name of the real person who gave me the story to read?
