I think this was discussed somewhere. Maps used in battle have glyphs in them to identify stuff for men. So they overcome that problem.
Placement of glyphs could help with the placement of cities and such but there would still be considerable difficulty doing any kind of grid system. Then there is the difficulty with figuring out distances.
