I also like how he deflects Harry's suspicions about Draco. I am sure the "Dumbledore should tell Harry everything" crow disagrees, but I don't think Harry would be able to handle the truth.
Hm. Agreed, I think. And I don't know if Dumbledore fully trusts Harry to keep his mouth shut on the Snape matter... the less people know about it, the better.
True.
I really like seeing him as a child.
Yes, it does offer some depth to his character... though Rowling makes clear he was a sociopath from the start, even if his childhood wasn't the easiest. I like how she avoided the cliché traumatic orphanage thing and replaced it by a flawed but well-intentioned one.
Yes. Especially since she has already made a point of showing that Harry is not determined by his childhood.
Ron and Harmione: their spat over the Slug Club and the reaction when she says she was going to ask him ... aww.
Yes. And then Ginny has to go and ruin it. See below.
I wouldn't say that is all down to Ginny.
I feel so sorry for Hermione when Ron goes off on his insanity period. Lavender Brown. I ask you. Of course, death by birds seems a fitting punishment. As is taking Cormac to the party. Take THAT stupid boy!
I liked the comment about how she "left Harry to ponder in silence the depths to which girls would sink to get revenge". Which is so true - seriously, what the hell is that about? Dating someone else so Ron will realize he wants her, fine, even though Ron *already* realizes and is already employing the same tactic, so it isn't the smartest tactic to begin with. But dating someone she can't stand just to annoy Ron... that is indeed incredibly lame.
Interesting that you would say that. I sympathise entirely with Hermione here, and I think she is doing exactly the right thing. A perfect punishment. And she isn't really dating him. She is just taking him to a party. And avoids him.
But prior to that, yes, I felt quite sorry for Hermione too.
Harry: finally. Jesus Christ. That boy is slow on the uptake. It takes enthusiastic kissing right in front of him for him to get it?
And how. The "roaring monster" thing seemed slightly over the top, but it's amusing.
I agree about the monster. But I suppose that is what it takes to wake the boy up.
His idea for tricking Ron into playing better is excellent, though. It shows insight into human psyche I really hadn't thought he had. Perhaps he is growing up.
He's realized before that Ron's issue is confidence, and since he's never been slow in practical issues, I'm not surprised.
True.
Ginny: anyone else feel like applauding after her go at Ron after his tantrum?
No. My main reaction - this time around, can't remember on earlier reads - is bewilderment. Why exactly is Ginny successively "beside herself", "snorting with derisive laughter" and "close to tears now"? That she would get mad and try and get her brothers out of her love life for once and for all, is understandable. But her getting so very upset about it suggests there's more to it. Guilt seems like the obvious explanation - after all, she was raised in the same somewhat puritan family as Ron, perhaps part of her does feel guilty for going through boyfriends at such a rate, particularly since she's still got her sights set on Harry at the end of the day. Frustration too, maybe.
I am with Rebekah on this. It makes perfect sense.
Either way, her tantrum there (temporarily) spoils the careful steps Ron and Hermione had been taking towards each other, and causes Hermione great pain, so I wouldn't applaud her for it, no. Of course Hermione then goes and does even more questionable things, and in the end she does get Ron where she wants him, but still.
That cannot be laid tat Ginny's door. Ron has way more agency here.
Of course that is what pushes Ron off the deep end. And it was going so swimmingly with Hermione. *sigh*
Exactly.
Luna: I love her. She is spot on. And the "no one has asked me to a party as a friend before" breaks my heart. But in a good way. She really was the best choice for it. I wonder whether Harry invited her because she had just mentioned Ginny. He seems to be acting on reflexes about her a lot here.
Yeah, we never really get an explanation for that one... but it's a good choice.
Snape: I really, really like how entirely ambiguous the drawing of him is here.
Yep.
