Re: Mr Weasley, Lupin, Fleur, Harry and Scrimgeour

Mr Weasley: I like the glimpse we get of him in Ron's reminiscence from when he was a kid and the twins tried to get him to make the unbreakable vow. We know he loves his children, but I love it when the Weasleys are startled into a violent reaction for some reason (that is probably why I like Mrs Weasley's comment to Bellatrix, which we'll discuss in book 7 unless I miss my guess).
Yeah, it's one of the advantages of being generally even-tempered and calm - when he does lose it, he makes quite the impression. It does highlight the additional risks to children that magical families face, though... on the other hand, I suppose for most of them things like traffic accidents aren't really a factor, so maybe it evens out.
Lupin: the voice of reason. He is quite right, of course. Trusting Snape is down to trusting Dumbledore's judgement.
Indeed. I like how he has a more mixed view of Snape now, too.
It is interesting to read about his experience with other werewolves. WE are obviously inclined to take Harry's view and think of it as a minor problem that does not affect the person Lupin himself (also, "many people were under the impression that I owned a badly behaved rabbit" had me giggling), but to a great extent his problem is the same as that of the giants. Vodlemort pretends to give werewolves freer reign, while his ideology all the while is repressive.
It's how it always goes, really... the revolutionaries use dangerous and violent people until they are in power, then liquidate them when they don't need them anymore.
And you were right about the Wolfsbane potion, seems it does indeed help people control lycanthropy (funny how there's an actual Greek word for "being a werewolf"...).
Lupin's reaction when mentioning Greyback is subtle, but speaks volumes.
Yeah. And we'll see later on in the book that it's a rather understandable reaction. Greyback really is one of the scariest Death Eaters in the whole series.
Fleur: she is surprisingly socially clueless. She really seems to have no social antennas (antennae?). Perhaps it comes with being so beautiful: she has never had to develop the skills?
She's doing it on purpose, surely. That can't just be her being clueless. Either way it's really awkward for Bill, though. I remember someone - Seriana? - saying in the Phlegm chapter that Fleur was quite innocent of all the charges against her, but I couldn't agree there, and certainly not here. Ginny and the others fail to see her good sides, certainly, but she does give them reason to dislike her.
Percy: he is just there because Scrimgeor needed an admittance ticket to the house, isn't he? For some reason I remember it as him arriving penitent, but that isn't what happens at all! I am glad the twins and Ginny pelted him with parsnip.
He'll arrive penitent at some later point, not sure where... in book seven, presumably.
Harry: I love his scene with Scrimgeour. It is one of his best. He is what he should be. Doing the right thing, thinking straight.
Yeah. I do like how Scrimgeour is more direct and forceful than Fudge, though - you can see how this is a man of action with not much talent for politics, more than a career politician like Fudge. And Harry is certainly shining here, confident and mature.
And the scene in Dumbledore's office later on, when he tells him what he said, is lovely. I am so glad that happened before the end of the book.
Dumbledore's self-deprecating reaction ("How very rude of him"
is great there, too. Scrimgeour: ack. Why is the wizarding world not better at choosing competent leaders? Also, it really is quite shocking that a woman who abused children last year (and is clearly insane) is still working for the ministry.
I'm wondering if they really know how bad things got, though. Umbridge made clear enough in the previous book that Fudge didn't know about some of the darker things she did, and I'm not sure that they'd really have found out all of that afterwards.
It is surprising to the reader, though. Umbridge's exit last book really did feel like a permanent one, so we're shocked quite as much as Harry when hearing that she's back at the Ministry and apparently in close contact with the Minister. The extent of Scrimgeour's bad judgement about her will become clear in book seven, when she continues to work for the Dark Ministry even after Scrimgeour himself has been killed on the job.
