Has she read Ian Rankin's Rebus books? They're not gruesome, they're filled with a lot of Scottish humour (i.e. dark), and there are small elements of romance in them.
I also suggest Alafair Burke. I've only read one, I know, but it was very good. I've got another here at the moment.
And if anyone knows good contemporary romance, family chronicles, and the like, not Harlequin-like but not too literary either (i.e. no Byatt), that'd be good too.
Has she read Georgette Heyer? Not modern, but set (mostly) in Regency England. Hilarious, charming, and definitely happy-making.
Marian Keyes is fun, and Cecilia Ahern is supposed to be good.
