Ever heard George R.R. Martin's story about a signing in the 1990s in the St. Louis area?

I went to Borders this past weekend and they had a table set up for some author. I walked by several times and the guy looked really bored. He was idly tapping the table and the woman next to him looked utterly miserable. I didn't see one person walk up to them. But it really doesn't help when your book is about leadership and hiring. I humored the guy though.

When I attended his November 2005 signing in Nashville, he told this story how he was at this convention in the St. Louis area sometime around the release of the first SOIAF book (I believe). Due to someone "big" also signing in the area (I can't remember if it was Bradbury or Vance, but someone at the same convention was signing that night in the general area), he had his signing set up in a smallish store.
There were four people present. When they announced that it was time for his book signing to begin, two people promptly left. He claims that he must be one of the few authors who have ever driven readers away from a signing. Funny how far some have gone since then, no?

None of the bookstores I've been in have ever had a signing when I've been around. *NM*
