To a certain extent, the book is more of a historical artifact. It was a massive innovation at the time and gave rise to an entire genre, but because the genre has gone so far (actually, genres), it can sometimes be unsatisfying. I still enjoyed it, but I can see how others would not.
And I think the same is true for Frankenstein. In terms of 19th century horror classics, Poe is the one who has remained the most readable for modern readers, by far, if you ask me.
A few thoughts on my Classic challenge book. Well, books, as it turns out.

There's really only one high fantasy classic, no? Or two, if you count the Silm separately. *NM*

You can't love all of the classics, but it's not like it's a genre of its own that you can dislike.

The Swiss Family Robinson is hardly a "classic", unless by "classic" you mean "old".

A lot of "classics" need proper context to be appreciated
