To a certain extent, the book is more of a historical artifact. It was a massive innovation at the time and gave rise to an entire genre, but because the genre has gone so far (actually, genres), it can sometimes be unsatisfying. I still enjoyed it, but I can see how others would not.

And I think the same is true for Frankenstein. In terms of 19th century horror classics, Poe is the one who has remained the most readable for modern readers, by far, if you ask me.
