I'm shopping for an e-reader for my upcoming birthday, but I just can't make up my mind.

The Kindle seems like a better piece of equipment overall - longer battery charge, slightly faster response, slightly smaller and lighter.

But, with the DRM issues, I'm really leaning towards a Nook. I like borrowing books from my local library, and it sounds like the Kindle format doesn't allow for that. Also, it looks like you can only get books from Amazon with the Kindle, while the Nook allows you to get books from just about anywhere, in any format.

Any advice?


Still, I chose the Nook over the Kindle because Amazon is just being stupid to try and keep pushing their format instead of adopting epub which is what a whole lot of people want. Amazon's insistence on their format just annoys me.

But to be honest, I have seen Kindles and I think I have to agree with you that they do seem to be a better product. They just look nicer and more comfortable. Still, I like my Nook and have adjusted to reading it and holding it for the best positions for me and it is not awkward or anything like that. and I wouldn't call the Nook cheap either. It is still pretty sturdy.

Loading books on a Nook is pretty easy. You have to sign up on B&N's website and you have to provide a credit card to register the Nook. The reason for this (from my understanding) is that the card number is scrambled and encrypted as part of the DRM scheme. It's like a unique identifier because well, when unscrambled it is a number only you should know.

As far as transferring books you just do it by USB into a My Library folder on the device. Same with music and photos for screensavers, etc. Books also download from your Barnes and Noble account too directly over wireless. The extra money for G3 was not worth it to me because I figured I can probably find free wireless somewhere at some point if I really want to purchase and download a book. I have not bought from other stores so I don't know how that works but I imagine you would have to make an account and use a credit card to purchase, etc.

I kind of dig too the SD card slot on the Nook. Extra memory (up to 4 gigs on the card I believe). I don't believe the Kindle is expandable. But honestly, I don't know if you really need it. I have books that are 1500 pages that ring in at a whopping 1.2 MB, so it is unlikely that you would have so many books you would run out of memory on the machine's chip.

Hmm, not sure if I can tell you anything else. You should definitely do your research and see what will fit your needs better. Maybe spend some time on MobileRead.com

Oh! I have the regular old black and white in case you were wondering. I didn't have need for color but I have heard they are very nice if that is what you are seeking.
