We went to the library, chose a book, read it, did a report on it (with a lot of vocab cards and other things we had to do). I think we had to do 4 per year minimum, or maybe 8.
The only problem with the format was that we were so open to choose books we'd get ourselves in trouble. I once chose War and Peace ... as a seventh grader. I couldn't handle it and ended up getting in trouble because I never did a book report or anything on it.
The books I can remember being forced to read were ...
White Fang
Where the Red Fern Grows (made me cry
)
Indian in the Cupboard
The Chronicles of Narnia, book I, but my Mom might of had me read that ...
That's all I can remember ...

Not many - they should be made to read, yes, but why not let them choose themselves?

Beverly Cleary should be good for that age. She did Mouse and the Motorcycle.

I don't think forcing books on kids is the way to get them to enjoy reading
