1. Does July 12 apply both to the UK and US? I presume so since he included the names of both publishers in his post.

2. If he's truly so close to finishing, why not just wait another couple weeks and make both the date and "I'm Done" announcements at the same time?


July 12 applies to both the UK and USA. The UK edition will be in one volume with the hardcover and tradeback and two volumes in mass-market paperback.

The publishers need to give bookshops and buyers time to order the book in before publication, the longer the better (6 months+ is preferred), so Bantam didn't want to leave it any longer before announcing the date.

Based on various sources, Martin is currently editing and revising the last 2 chapters of the book. Everything else is done, edited, in and locked.
