Is there a set number of expected book in this series, like WoT? Is this book the penultimate or the last one or what?

Just wondering.

Well, WoT never had a set number of books. Jordan originally said 3 (!!!), then 6, then 10, then 12 etc. So that's not a great precedent ;)


Ha, true! I was thinking more recently, where Jordan promised there would only be Knife of Dreams and A Memory of Light.

ASoIaF was originally also 3, then 4 for about five minutes before Martin realised that wasn't going to fly and put it up to six (this was back when A GAME OF THRONES first came out).

For reasons far too long and tedious to get into again, Books 4 and 5 have been chopped up, moved around, bled into one another and so forth, so it's now seven. Due to Martin's contract with HBO, I've got a feeling it might have to stay at seven as well, as adding another book means adding another season and tens of millions of dollars to the TV series budget.
