It depends on your background knowledge and/or willingness to look stuff up. Legolas Send a noteboard - 05/04/2011 10:51:46 PM
Because like I said, Castelot really doesn't fill in any of the gaps himself. But I do think he paints a fascinating and credible portrait of Napoleon, both as a private person and as a military/political leader. A positive, French view, to be sure, but he doesn't spare the criticism when required (like in the mess with the Duke d'Enghien). No doubt other biographies are more dispassionate and objective, I don't know if any of them are as lively and entertaining though.
or should I look around for another one?

I have been meaning to read a Napoleon biography for some time. I was going to buy a Norwegian or Swedish one, but it was still too expensive last I checked.

Well, this one is 25 euro for each volume on French Amazon currently, but I've been reading a second-hand copy I picked up in Brussels for 4 euro, so price wasn't really a consideration... it does make me hesitate about whether or not to buy the second volume in the near future.

I don't see why biographies are more difficult to review than history books generally. - 06/04/2011 03:30:37 PM 232 Views
