It's not so much the actual author writing down to you - it's written in the tone of a "kinda snooty English professor of magical history" sort of narrator. Which works for this story because, well, all the English magicians are pretty snooty.

Obviously this won't mitigate your problems with reading it in the slightest. I just hope you don't think it's Susanna Clarke herself who's looking down on you.
