Because of your question I went back and tried to read it again.
I think I find her style of writing annoying and pretentious.
It feels like she's writing down to me.

It's not so much the actual author writing down to you - it's written in the tone of a "kinda snooty English professor of magical history" sort of narrator. Which works for this story because, well, all the English magicians are pretty snooty. ;)

Obviously this won't mitigate your problems with reading it in the slightest. I just hope you don't think it's Susanna Clarke herself who's looking down on you. :P
