I'd say that having to cram that many of them into a very short period of time is "too much of a good thing", but I'm not certain they really are that. But perhaps I've being too antagonistic toward them. I took a Greek and Roman mythology class, just because it fulfilled requirements, had a good professor, and was about an interesting topic. But it turned out that reading myths just for fun, and reading them when having to remember the twenty different nearly identical names starting with "A", are two entirely different things.
So perhaps not so much boring as annoying. Although Hesiod's Theogony is both very annoying and very boring. Unlike the original Greek audience I do not care at all for him mentioning the small and unremarkable streams that happens to pass near my little town, so for me it is just a bunch of repetitive and boring lists that I would never be able to remember, and would certainly never care to try. Though as I said in my title, I have no real cause to complain, I'm just whining, lol.
I may be disproportionally fascinated by Greek myths, that is true. But I loved the Theogony. I don't think I have ever scribbled so much in margins as I did in that one. But I did have a very good lecturer at the time.
As for Troilus, nope, it is a proper poetry translation, and even includes the Middle English version, which is entertaining to read and compare to the modern one. (Which is actually one of the reasons I'm annoyed by the myths, because most of the translations are modern prose and Telemachus complains that the suitors may go "scot-free", a word that elicits a wince from me every time I see it used there. Same goes for Aeneid, when even a simple google search turned up the vastly superior Dryden translation on wikisource.)
There should be a law against making people read bad translations.
