It's mostly difficult to get into because you're dropped in the middle of the story.

Soon enough...is it terribly difficult to get into because it's so broad?
It's a nice change from the slow cliché starts of many other fantasy series, but in the first few hundred pages you really are wondering what on earth is going on at times. (For that matter, at the end of the book you still don't know everything there is to know - some smaller revelations that explain things in the first book occur in the later books of the series, so it's a series in which rereads really can make you discover new things or interpret things differently.)
Plus, the first book simply isn't as good as most of the others. Most fans of the series had a hard time with the first book but are glad they pushed on because books two and three are so good.
