If I'm doing a substantial amount of writing, it's just plain easier to use a mechanical pencil because I hate dull pencils and sharpening my pencil ever thirty minutes is irritating. I also get a finer point with my mechanical pencils (not TOO much finer, since I'm very particular and only like .7 lead :P) so I feel like I can make more precise notations. I really don't, but it's a nice psychological effect ;)

However, if I'm drawing, I HATE using a mechanical pencil. I suck at drawing, so if I'm having to fight my lead to do things like various gradients or stroke sizes, I get really really irritated.

For some reason, I also just enjoy the feel of writing with a wood pencil more. I have no idea why. But, like I said, I do like a sharp pencil and it's irritating to sharpen frequently.

Don't even get me started on my pen preferences.
