Personally, I like finding out how something develops from the status quo to the end result. In most cases, this means that spoilers don't matter, or increase my enjoyment. My fiance wants to be surprised, so spoilers are a definite no.
Of course, there are stories which can be spoiled by a vital spoiler even for me, e.g. those that rely on a surprise twist ending.
