It has more pontification by Tolstoy and a lot more characters, side stories, diversions, digressions, etc. Anna Karenina has, essentially, three story lines. The one that gets the most attention is actually that of Konstantin Levin, the character that most agree is autobiographical - he is very, very close to Tolstoy in many ways. Then there is Stepan (Stiva) Oblonsky and his wife Daria (Dolly), which is a minor thread but important because Stiva is Anna Karenina's brother and Dolly becomes Levin's sister-in-law. The third story line is Anna's story line.
