Baudolino is rather full of obscure references to old texts. So if he was talking about the erudition problem it makes sense to single out Loana, since most of its obscure references as to pop culture and recent history.
When he talks of Prester John and the like, I have a general idea what he's talking about at least. With Italian pre-WW2 comic books, not so much.
A great many of those comics I knew, probably because they were adaptations of American comics, some of which were revived when I was growing up, like Flash Gordon.
