Fair enough. Panorphaeon Send a noteboard - 03/01/2012 07:41:47 PM
A lot of people felt that it seemed substantively different from Hesse's earlier works, and it has been criticized by some. I am certainly planning on reading it, and soon, but if you want to read something by Hesse you haven't, I'd suggest one of the other ones as perhaps a better opportunity to start off with a strong book that you don't struggle through.

I'll probably wait on it and take something shorter for now. From what I understand, A Journey to the East was a preparatory model for Glass Bead Game. I read that one -- barely more than a pamphlet, really -- and the idea seemed cool. Anyway if you do get around to it I'd be interested in what you think.

Just for the record, I've read Demian, Gertrude, Beneath the Wheel, Steppenwolf, Siddhartha and Peter Camenzind. Also some of Wandering. That's an interesting little book.

I haven't read any Hesse yet, nor Women in Love, but intend to read the latter soon. - 01/01/2012 01:21:58 PM 1007 Views
