The 80s was "sex sells" Guys buy sci fi and fantasy, guys like seeing nekid girls, ergo nekid girls sells books. IT wasn't really until Lacky, Norton, and McCaffery really became big that the publishing world woke up to the fact that their demographic was larger than that. IF you went to a fantasy or sci fi cons during that time you know what I mean.
If this doesn't convince you how sexist American SF was during the 1980s...
