I think King writes flawed characters better than anyone, and he loves letting them have a chance at redemption (see Callahan coming back in the Dark Tower books). But what King really excels at is writing about kids, and/or from a kids point of view. He touched on that a little here, and it gets better as he progresses as an author. You'll see that as you start The Shining.
I think I agree that King does flawed characters well. I'm about 70 pages into The Shining right now and he's nailing it with Jack Torrance, who really seems to be almost based on the author in a lot of ways. I've noted that Danny is done really well too, the thought patterns feel like they could actually belong to a young boy. And I know that the group of kids is one of the reasons why I loved It, the first non-Tower King book I read.
