And you summarized it wonderfully. I think the book works so well because of the mix of horrific supernatural scares and terrifying reality. So much of Jack is based on King's real life faults/impulses that the reader can really identify with him as a man that only needed a little push to become a monster. Most people never receive that push.
Thanks. I was definitely struck by how much Jack was based on King, and it takes either an odd or a dedicated author to take a character based strongly on himself and do what King did with Jack Torrance.
I am not a huge fan of Tony, I think that aspect of the book shows King's youth, but the rest of the characters are terrific, especially Danny.
It really was the strongest set of King characters so far. Far, far ahead of his 'Salem's Lot characters, in my opinion.
Rage is a fun one. No longer in print due to Columbine and other school shootings.
I was surprised to see that. I have an older, first-edition printing of The Bachman Books, so I can still read it. I guess it says something when the young author writes something like that and the old author lets it go out of print. I'm not through it yet, but so far he's again predating and predicting that sort of thing, in a way that's both more and less realistic than what he did in Carrie. If that makes no sense, I guess I'll wait until my Rage post to elaborate.
