Interesting how divided opinion seems to be, other than that, wonder what I'll make of them myself.
From what I can tell the divided opinion is between people who've read the books and people who haven't.
Friend of mine (female, in her 20s, read Twilight too) loves the books, but I've also heard a lot of negative things and complaints about the series being the next Twilight (aka horrid crap). When I saw the first images from the film I knew why. Exclusively attractive teenagers in desperate situations. Not much there for people outside the target audience.
That being said, the trailer looks decent. If the first reviews aren't horrible, I plan to watch it.

I took it as both a lot more than reality TV satire, and not really that at all.

It's anything like twilight only in the sense that it has a lot of fans.

What about the fact it plagiarizes a better book and movie?

Which plagiarized Dune and so on and so forth. [Battle Royale plagiarized the Lotterry, etc, etc]

They're worth reading. (Everyone, do just try reading the first book) Ideally, before movie.

Even before reading on wikipedia, I thought, "this is a rip-off of Battle Royale."
