I could easily produce a fantasy fan who adores Lord of the Rings and is appalled by anything Weirder than a Dragonlance book. Between that fan and Larry, you'd eliminate practically everything.
Fionavar is decent, but not exceptional; all of Kay's later work vastly outstrips it in my opinion.
I think you would be still be hard pressed to find a fantasy work more widely admired among fantasy fans than Lord of the Rings. I think the vast majority of people who dislike the elements of romanticism and sexism that are portrayed in the story are still capable of appreciating it as a historical work.
Harry Potter, I suppose, surpasses it in popularity.

I like The Fionavar Tapestry, but I don't expect everybody does.

Hm. I think it'd be hard to hate David Eddings' The Belgariad

That only counts for those who have nostalgic feelings for it, I'm afraid. *NM*

More like having your love for it curdle into hate after reading the Mallorean, Elenium & Tamuli

Ha, at least in Mallorean it was a plot point (albeit a lame one)
